NIATx

     Since 2005, OASAS has used the Network for the Improvement of Treatment (NIATx) principles as a foundation for the conceptual and theoretical framework of IPR processes and procedures. These empirically-derived concepts are guiding treatment principles for improving treatment outcomes specifically related to patient access and retention in treatment. NIATx principles have been integrated with the peer review process to help stimulate process improvements and strengthen treatment. OASAS has developed the peer review process to not only address the six federally mandated review areas, but to specifically focus on process improvement opportunities in the areas of patient access and retention.

      NIATx strives to both orient programs to process improvement methods and facilitate the application of those methods to enhance treatment outcomes. The four NIATx aims are relevant to NYS treatment providers and are as follows:

       1) Reduce waiting times between the initial contact with
           potential patients and the first treatment session;

       2) Reduce the number of patient no-shows;

       3) Increase admissions to treatment; and

       4) Increase continuation from the first through the fourth
           treatment session.

      In the Finger Lakes, the Communities of Solution initiative has joined in promoting NIATx principles for all treatment agencies.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

     The Region II Consortium of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Providers is an organization of prevention and  treatment agencies dedicated to the reduction and elimination of alcoholism and drug abuse throughout the Finger Lakes 12 county region.

     This Consortium meets on a monthly basis to discuss programmatic issues, administrative issues, and to advocate for the rights and needs of those who are chemically dependent.

     The premise upon which Region II CASAS stands is as follows: all individuals and families who are affected by alcoholism or other drug dependency have a right to prevention and treatment services to include: a right to treatment upon demand and a right to the level of treatment and length of  treatment appropriate for the level of severity, co-morbidity, and associated stressors and complications.

     CASAS further recognizes that for every $1 invested in alcoholism/drug abuse prevention and treatment, there is a savings return to society of $7-12, in reduced health care costs, reduced crime and violence costs, reduced welfare costs, decreased business costs, decreased insurance costs, and increases to the government in overall tax revenues.
